Advice By Paul Gaines, Ph.D
Q: Would you give me a little more details for the sample preparation of silicones using KOH? Is HF needed in this method?
A: HF is not needed. A 1 Molar solution of KOH is prepared in ethanol and equal volumes of it are mixed with the sample in a 5 ounce LDPE bottle and capped. This bottle is placed in a water bath at 60 deg C for 4 hours and then the contents are diluted by weight or volume to the desired final wt. or volume. I believe that butyl cellusolve will make a fantastic solvent. Please note it is listed as a teratogen so exercise necessary precautionary measures.
