General Information:
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers or BDEs, are man-made organobromine chemicals that are used as flame retardants. There are 209 congeners or isomers. BDEs are added to plastics and foam products to make them difficult to burn. They are structurally similar to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Like PCBs, these chemicals do not degrade and accumulate in the environment. Many studies have been done on the possible impact to our health and the environment. Because of their persistence and toxicity, the production of the penta-BDE and octa-BDE isomers has been discontinued in many countries.
