Cadmium
Location: Group 12, Period 5 Storage & Handling: Keep tightly sealed when not in use. Store and use at 20 ± 4°C. Do not pipet from container. Do not return portions removed for pipetting to container. Chemical Compatibility: Stable in HCl, HNO3, H2SO4, and HF. Avoid basic media forming insoluble carbonate and hydroxide. Stable with most metals and inorganic anions in acidic media. The sulfide, carbonate, oxalate, phosphate, and cyanide are insoluble in water and soluble in HCl, HNO3, and NH4OH. The chloride, bromide, and iodide are soluble in water. CdI2 is one of the few iodides soluble in ethanol. All compounds of Cd are soluble in excess NaI, due to the formation of the complex ion, CdI42-. Stability: 2-100 ppb levels stable for months in 1% HNO3 / LDPE container. 1-10,000 ppm solutions chemically stable for years in 1-5 % HNO3 / LDPE container. Cd Containing Samples (Preparation & Solution): Metal (soluble in HNO3); Oxides (soluble in HCl or HNO3); Ores (dissolve in HCl /HNO3 then take to fumes with H2SO4. The silica and lead sulfate are filtered off after the addition of water); Organic based (dry ash at 450°C and dissolve ash in HCl), (Sulphuric / peroxide acid digestion). |
