Join us for our 2023 ICP Academy, having been held successfully over the last 5 years in both the USA & Europe.

Attendance will be limited to 30 participants, and is CPD accredited, so don’t delay in securing your place for what will be a very informative session.

Technique & Technology - a widening gap
From experience and feedback from clients, there appears to be a widening gap between recent developments in instrumentation - offering ever-improved levels of sensitivity - and previously acceptable analytical techniques.

The program is aimed at both new & experienced analysts, covering all the key laboratory skills supporting ICP techniques.

ICP Academy 2019 Program
09:00 – 09:30 Welcome & Registration
09:30 – 10:15 Session 1:  Introduction - How do we produce reliable analytical data?
Cliff Marshall B.Sc.,M.Sc., MIBiol., CIBiol. Managing Director, ESSLAB
The increase in technological developments in ICP instrumentation has led to improvements in the characterisation and
analysis of samples. Advancements in sensitivity of both ICP-OES and ICP-MS measurements also bring about enhanced
resolution lowering detection limits and reducing interference.
ICP-OES or ICP-MS are versatile tools, allowing sensitive multi-element analysis in a variety of matrices. However,
it is now essential that sample preparation, calibration and validation are assessed as fit for purpose for matching
these technological improvements. For complex sample matrices, trace analysis remains a stubborn challenge for
laboratories who are required to verify and validate analytical data with traceability to internationally recognised
Learning Objectives...
10:15 – 11:00 Session 2 - Limits of ICP Analyses
Brian Alexander Ph.D. Vice President, Technical Operations, Inorganic Ventures
What can and cannot be measured, as well as which analytes are challenging simply due to constraints of ICP
technology. ICP-MS (ppt) vs ICP-OES (ppb)
Learning Objectives...
11:00 - 11:15 Tea/Coffee Break
11:15 – 12:15 Session 3 - Calibration Techniques
Dirk Wuestkamp Dr. Dipl.Chem. Senior Product Specialist ICP-OES, Spectro Analytical Instruments & Brian Alexander
The analytical data the analyst produces may be precise, but is it precisely inaccurate. How do we deliver both
accuracy and precision?
Learning Objectives...
12:15 – 13:00 Session 4 - Chemistry of ICP Standards
Brian Alexander
Can you measure everything in anything simultaneously? This session includes standard and sample preparation matrix
concerns, as well as tips on ensuring confidence when preparing multi-element standards.
Learning Objectives...
13:00 – 13:45 Buffet Lunch Break
13:45 – 14:30 Session 5 - Traceability, ISO, and Compliance
Cliff Marshall
How do we realise traceability to internationally recognized standards?
The importance of documentation in the supply chain.
Storage considerations & shelf life.
Learning Objectives...
14:30 – 15:15 Session 6 - Instrument Maintenance and Tuning – Method Development
Dirk Wuestkamp
Components of sample introduction systems. Selecting torches general maintenance etc., pumps/syringe drives, spray
chambers, nebulizers, cones & tuning procedures.
Learning Objectives...
15:15 – 15:30 Tea/Coffee Break
15:30 – 16:30 Session 7 - Sample Preparation
Dirk Wuestkamp
Why is sample and standard preparation just as important as the analysis itself?
Learning Objectives...
16:30 – 17:30 Round-table discussion
